USA Baseball will interview candidates for the Golden Spikes Award three times per week as part of its Golden Strikes series. In this edition, Mississippi State right-hander Jonathan Holder answers a few questions about himself.

Name: Jonathan Holder

School: Mississippi State University

College major or area of interest: Marketing

What would it mean to you to win the Golden Spikes Award?

It would be an honor. When you walk into the baseball offices you see Will Clark's award from the '80s, so just to be in the running for it is pretty cool. It's a blessing for me and my team.

Aside from winning the Golden Spikes Award, what are your goals for 2014?

To make it back to Omaha and seal the deal this time as a team.

Which baseball player do you model your game after?

Definitely a guy like Brandon Workman of the Boston Red Sox. I feel like we are very similar.

Who would you like to thank for helping you get where you are in your career?

My teammates that I have had here at Mississippi State as well as Coach Thompson, Coach Cohen and Coach Mingione. They have all been a huge blessing to me in my development.

What are some of your pregame rituals?

Music and hanging around with the team in the locker room. We like to keep things loose and goof off a good bit.

What motivates you to be successful?

Just being able to come out here and play a game I love.
