15U: USA Tops Germany In Eight Innings, 11-1
With the win, Team USA finishes off group B play with a 5-0 record and will begin second-round action Wednesday.
Mazatlan, Mexico - Step one is complete for the USA Baseball 15U National Team at the WBSC 'AA' 15U World Cup, as an 11-1 win over Germany in eight innings Monday morning at Benito Juarez Stadium left them undefeated (5-0) at the conclusion of pool play. Step two begins Wednesday as the U.S. and five other teams enter round two, which features four games in four days that will decide the bronze- and gold-medal games next Sunday, August 10.
Just about 14 hours after finishing off Japan, 7-2, the U.S. had to regroup and get ready for Germany, who was looking to conclude pool play with a winning record. There were mistakes that will surely be worked on for the U.S., but the result was the same as the red, white and blue plated runs in six of the eight innings played by churning out nine hits, drawing 10 walks and getting hit five times. The U.S. also had three sacrifice flies that helped put the game away.
On the mound, the U.S. pitchers twirled a one hitter as the threesome of Justin Bullock (Creedmoor, N.C.), Thomas Burbank (Beaumont, Texas) and Blake Paugh (Scottsdale, Ariz.) continued an already remarkable week for U.S. pitching. After giving up just one unearned run against Germany, the U.S. staff boasts a remarkable 0.79 ERA as it has given up just three earned runs (six overall) in 34 innings of work.
Monday, Bullock was especially dominant as he walked three and struck out nine in 5.2 no-hit innings.
While Bullock was limiting Germany at the dish, the U.S. offense was busy scoring two runs each in the first, fourth and sixth innings and one each in the fifth and seventh frames to make the score 8-1.
Looking to end the contest in the eighth inning, Team USA quickly loaded the bases with no outs. RF Austin Martin (Orange Park, Fla.) notched his second sac fly of the game to score one before Brice Turang (Corona, Calif.) walked off Germany with a single down the left-field line to plate Alejandro Toral (Davie, Fla.) and Ryan Vilade (Frisco, Texas).
Vilade and Royce Lewis (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) were the lone multi-hit performers for Team USA on the day, but Turang, Mark Vientos (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Cordell Dunn Jr. (Olive Branch, Miss.) and Kristofer Armstrong (Jupiter, Fla.) all claimed a pair of walks, while Toral and Jacob Blas (Carlsbad, Calif.) were each hit twice.
The U.S. begins its second step towards a gold medal Wednesday as it meets Cuba. More information on that game will be announced later Monday.
