WNT: Team USA Defeats Netherlands in 10-0 Shutout
Women's National Team records second straight shutout and run rule victory
GIJANG, KOREA -- In its second consecutive run rule victory, the USA Baseball Women's National Team defeated the Netherlands, 10-0, in five innings in the second round of consolation games at the 2016 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's Baseball World Cup at Gijang-Hyundai Dream Ballpark in Gijang, Korea.
Marti Sementelli (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) got the start on the mound for Team USA and notched her second win of the tournament. Sementelli faced 15 batters in her five shutout innings in which she allowed just one hit, struck out four and walked none.
Team USA put the game away early with five runs in the first inning. Brittany Gomez (New Braunfels, Texas) led things off with a triple, and Megan Baltzell (Stafford, Va.) and Malaika Underwood (San Diego, Calif.) hit back-to-back doubles that scored three early runs. Underwood scored on an RBI-single by Jessica Iwata (Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii), and Gomez notched an RBI with a bases-loaded walk in her second plate appearance of the inning.
Team USA plated three more runs in the second inning on an RBI-groundout by Iwata, a balk that scored Tamara Holmes (Albany, Calif.) from third and an RBI-double by Anna Kimbrell (Rock Hill, S.C.). The final two runs came in the third inning when Amalia Hopson (Sequim, Wash.) doubled and then scored on an RBI-single by Underwood, who later crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
