DURHAM, N.C. - USA Baseball announced on Friday that Ricky Meinhold has been named the pitching coach for the 2017 18U National Team. Meinhold replaces Rusty Filter on the staff after Filter was named the Head Coach at Santa Clara University in June.
The 18U National Team will compete in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, from September 1-10. Team USA is the three-time defending World Cup champion and will look to become the second country to win four-straight gold medals in the tournament.
Meinhold is a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals. Meinhold was a pitching coach at Lindenwood University and Coker College from 2011-2013, prior to joining the Cardinals organization. He pitched collegiately at Drury University and went on to play for an affiliate of the San Diego Padres, becoming the first pitcher in Drury program history to play professional baseball.
Mienhold has worked within the USA Baseball ranks in the past two seasons. He was the pitching coach at the 2016 17U National Team Development Program (NTDP) and was the lead pitching evaluator at the 2017 Tournament of Stars.
USA Baseball will announce the 2017 18U National Team Trials roster on Monday, July 10, at the MLB All-Star Game Fanfest. The selection show will stream on MLB.com at 10 a.m.
