USA stymies Honduras, wins big 18-0
Jimmy Wallace pitches solid, picks up 5 strikeouts
Jimmy Wallace took the mound for Team USA in the top of the first inning and made quick work of the first three batters. After picking up a strikeout the defense recorded consecutive put outs to keep runners off of base as Wallace only kept the defense on the field in the first for 3 minutes.
Chris Rivera (Anaheim, Calif.), C.J. Hinojosa (Spring, Texas), Albert Almora (Hialeah, Fla.) and Chris Chinea (Miami, Fla.) each hit doubles in consecutive at bats to put the U.S. on board 3-0 with no outs in the first. Connor Martin (San Jose, Calif.) would follow with a triple to left center, scoring Chinea, as the U.S. scored 4 runs in their first five at bats of the game.
A passed ball scored Martin when Nolan Rogers (Bloomington, Ind.) earned a walk and Cody Poteet hit a double to put runners on second and third. After Robert Whalen (Stroudsburg, Pa.) got on board with an infield single, Rivera slammed a base-clearing triple to the centerfield wall in his second at bat of the inning, bringing the score to 8-0.
After picking up three more runs courtesy of an error, double and single, Whalen pushed a base hit through the right side to put runners on the corners with two outs. A passed ball then scored Poteet from third for the fourteenth and final run of the first inning.
Honduras picked up their first hit of the game on Wallace as the defense yielded an infield hit. But the U.S. first baseman, Whalen, grabbed a double play as he gloved a laser ground ball, picking up the force at first and throwing out Torres at second. Wallace would then pick up his second strikeout of the night as he ended the inning securing the 14 run lead.
Bryant Hodge (Moore, Okla.) began the bottom of the second with a lead off single to the pitcher and Adrian Marin (Miami, Fla.) and Chinea walked to load the bases with no outs. Jonny Locher (Burien, Wash.) came up and hit a base clearing triple to right field to bring Team USA to 17-0. He would then score the final run of the game on a wild pitch as the U.S. went ahead 18-0.
Jimmy Wallace (1-0) would close out the game in the top of the third inning for the U.S. as he picked up three more strikeouts. Wallace faced the minimum nine batters in the game, tallying five strikeouts and surrendering only one hit.
With the win, Team USA moves to 3-0 at the COPABE Pan Am "A" Qualifier and has outscored their opponents 64-0 in three games.
Chris Chinea led the team as he went 2-2 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Jonny Locher and Chris Rivera both tallied 3 RBI on the day.
The U.S. will have Tuesday off and will then face unbeaten El Salvador (2-0) on Wednesday at 3pm (CT) at Enrique "Trapo" Torrebiarte Stadium.
