18U: Blue takes series with 3-0 win
Carson Kelly drives in game-winning run in fifth inning
CARY, N.C. - In its final tune-up for the Prospect Classic, the 18U National Trials team completed its three-game intrasquad scrimmage Thursday afternoon at the National Training Complex with the Blue team taking the series from the Red, 3-0, in six innings.
Carson Kelly laced an RBI single up the middle scoring Mitch Nay to give the Blue a 1-0 advantage. Nay, who led all players with two hits, tripled to right center with two outs and scored on Kelly's lone hit of the afternoon and second of the series. Kelly would come around to score on an errant throw by Jared Martinez while trying to steal second base.
Joey Gallo (1-0) picked up the win tossing two scoreless innings in the start. The right-hander allowed two hits and walked a pair before passing the ball to Kelly, who scattered three hits with a walk and strikeout over three frames. Rio Ruiz recorded the save with a scoreless sixth inning allowing a hit and fanning one.
Ty Hensley (0-1) took the loss surrendering all three runs on three hits in two innings of work. Ryan Koziol was impressive in the start for the Red squad striking out four and giving up one hit in four innings.
Chris Okey capped the scoring in the sixth bashing a solo home run down the left field line, extending Blue's lead to 3-0.
Gavin Cecchini lead all hitters with a .500 (5-for-10) average driving in three runs and narrowly missed hitting for the cycle in Red's lone win of the series in game one of the doubleheader on Wednesday. Nay was the top hitter for the Blue batting .400 (4-for-10) with a pair of runs.
On the mound, both teams combined for 52 strikeouts with the Red team recording 34. Chase DeJong led all hurlers with seven punch outs, while Matthew Crownover finished with five and logged Red's lone win.
The 18U National Trials team will be back in action Friday night when they square off against the Collegiate National Team in game one of the Prospect Classic, which will be held at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:05 p.m. (EST). Game two of the series will be played at the National Training Complex Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
Trial Notes: The 18U Trials team participated in a one-hour simulated scrimmage after the six-inning intrasquad game where they went through situational drills before heading to the Durham to tour the Durham Bulls Athletic Park ... For the upcoming Prospect Classic (July 1-2) there will be live scoring and live video streaming available on USABaseball.com ...
