GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The 18U National Training Team fell to UNC-Greensboro, Friday, 7-2. It will wrap up training Saturday when it plays at UNC-Wilmington at 2:05 p.m.

The U.S. fell behind in the bottom of the first inning when UNC-Greensboro had a two-RBI double of Cole Irvin that gave it a 2-0 lead. Both players who scored had reached base via walks earlier in the half inning.

UNC-Greensboro would increase its lead in the bottom of the third inning when it scored a run on a bases loaded, two-out, hit-by-pitch to go up three, 3-0. The scoring would continue in that inning when the next batter hit a deep fly ball to left field that resulted in an error by left fielder. The three runners on base would score putting UNC-Greensboro up by six, 6-0.

In the top of the fifth, the U.S. would get one of those runs back on a sacrifice fly by David Dahl to pull USA to within five, 6-1. However, in the bottom of the inning, UNC-Greensboro would match the run. After a leadoff single, the UNC-Greensboro runner would advance to second, third and home due to three wild pitches, giving UNC-Greensboro a 7-1 lead.

The U.S. would only get one of those runs back the rest of the game. In the top of the seventh, Gavin Cecchini scored on Mikey White's RBI fielder's choice to make it the final score of 7-2.

Losing on the mound for the U.S. was starting pitcher Irvin. He allowed only three earned runs but was affected by his five walks in three innings. Getting the win for UNC-Greensboro was Tyler Hollstegge. Leading the way for the U.S. at the plate was Cecchini who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.


A MAN DIVIDED: The head coach for UNC Greensboro, Mike Gaski, also has an affiliation with the team he faced. He is the president for USA Baseball.

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY: In the bottom of the fifth inning, there was quite a bit of rain and the game was paused for field maintenance. However, the umpires did not call for a rain delay and play resumed immediately after.

ON DECK: The 18U National Training Team will play Saturday in its final training game of the week. Afterwards, the team will be trimmed down to the final 20 that will represent the U.S. in the 2011 Junior Pan Ams. Tomorrow's game is at UNC-Wilmington with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
