PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Team USA (3-3) lost its second game in a row on Sunday, falling to Canada (6-1), 6-1. The defeat puts the U.S. in danger of not qualifying for Round 2.
With the loss, the U.S. now needs a Chinese Taipei (0-5) win over Puerto Rico (3-3) at 8:30 p.m. ET, Sunday night to keep its hopes alive for Round 2. Should Puerto Rico lose, the U.S. must then defeat Panama (6-0) on Monday at 3 p.m. ET to advance. Should Puerto Rico win, then the U.S. will not advance to Round 2, as Puerto Rico owns the tie-breaker against Team USA (8-4 Puerto Rico win in 10 innings on Oct. 4)
Todd Redmond (0-1) was tagged for three early runs for the second time in as many starts, giving up a three-run home run to Brock Kjeldgaard in the second.
The U.S. offense was kept at bay for much of the day, thanks in large part to Canadian starter Shawn Hill who only allowed one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. The lone U.S. run was plated by Matt Clark, who hit his team-leading third home run in the seventh.
Randy Williams came on in relief in the ninth and allowed three more Canadian runs to score to push the game to 6-1. Clark led off the home half of the inning with a walk, but the U.S. was unable to mount a rally.
Team USA will face host nation Panama (6-0) at 3 p.m. ET at Rod Carew Stadium on Monday to conclude Round 1 play for both teams. The game is a make-up from Saturday night's postponement.
