17U NTDP: Red handles Blue, 11-2
Mason Smith gets three hits, reaches base four times
CARY, N.C. -- Gavin Collins launched a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and from there, the Red team never looked back as it took down the Blue team, 11-2.
After Dale Burdick added another run for Red on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, Blue plated two runs on a balk, and then by an RBI double off the bat of Jackson Reetz.
The score remained 4-2 in favor of Red until the top of the eighth inning when Red exploded for four runs. Brady Aiken and Josh Morgan each had RBI singles in the inning, and two Blue team errors helped Red tack on its other two runs.
The Red team didn't slow down in the ninth inning, as it added three more runs on RBI singles from Derek Hill and Chris Andritsos. The sixth Blue error of the game allowed the third run of the inning to cross the plate for Red.
Mason Smith led the 14-hit attack for the Red team with three hits and he reached base four times. Along with Smith's standout performance, Josh Morgan and Tyler Cohen each had two hits.
For Blue, Joseph Dunand and Marvin Gorgas each had multi-hit games, and Griffin Canning and Matthew Crohan each threw two scoreless innings.
Calvin Lebrun picked up the win for Red, and Thomas Szapucki was hit with the loss for Blue.
The team will have an off day from on-field activity as it will travel to The Performance Academy in Apex, N.C. The team will continue the Red-Blue series Tuesday morning at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
